descending into deadlochposting on main i don't even care. this show is SO GOOD. i think the thing that really stuck with me throughout every episode is how committed it is to not fucking up women, and especially women of color, just to have a Plot Point + for Emotional Resonance!!! every woman on this show gets an ending that feels earned. (and yes that does include margaret carruthers.) there is just so much love woven into this narrative but they still manage to capture the grim miserable reality of patriarchy without EVER reducing a female character we care about to a Murder Victim or having her horrifically brutalized as an ending!!!! like holy shit, guys, it's actually fucking possible! you can create horror blended perfectly with humor and never actually fuck women over!!!

and yeah actually as a woc it felt really fucking good to watch a show where i got to see women of color (aleyna and tammy and sharelle and miranda and faye my beloved <333) just thrive and be silly and stupid and terrible and also lovable. and also, oh my god, revolutionary, NOT GET MURDERED, even though this is literally a fckin murder show!!! i said to my dad like midway through the series that i just got this sense the show understood how goddamn hard it is to watch television sometimes waiting for that character you love, who looks like you and has life experiences that resonate with you, to get killed, or to be treated like she's not important, and how dedicated it is to not just killing off women for shock value. every woman in this show mattered and had meaning and dimension.

because seriously, SO MANY INCREDIBLE WOMEN!!! abby with her perfect little haircut driving off into the sunset saying Of Course She Knows She's Right About Forensics. aleyna and her husband, her whole heart!!!! vanessa who in a lesser show would have been reduced to The Bad Woman, The Bigot, but we are shown how she has been abused and mistreated by men and how that's so informed her perspective + her genuine love for her son! sharelle who lays down the hard truths, who calls them out -- "all this civility but no fucking community" !!! miranda who learns that she doesn't want blood money from a woman who looks down on her cousin! tammy who is literally just all about that footy club the entire time even as men are being murdered and that's honestly so real of her. skye o'dwyer who perfectly captures that Emotionally Unavailable Dad energy except she's a lesbian and i love her. nadiyah who is Trying Her Best :) And Gritting Her Teeth About It :) faye who has no god damn patience for margaret carruthers and all kinds of blunt determined love for her niece and her daughter. vic who throws herself under the bus because she's just so determined to protect anyone she can after the women in this town protected her and kept her secret for so long!!! cath who parents her emotions and is definitely relentless in her guilting but also so relentless in her love. MARGARET CARRUTHERS WHO EXEMPLIFIES SHITTY RICH WHITE WOMAN. and of fucking course, the legends, the buddy-cop duo of all time, dulcie and eddie, who are just perpetually going around like this

except it's not even working because eddie chewed the leash off.

favorite show of the year by far. so so happy about it. rotating it joyfully in my brain for the next week, probably longer.

this is the only 'discourse' post i will ever make on this blog, but right when i jumped into this fandom, i was bombarded by ada hate. my thing is that, ada is important to me as a woman of color, because she is allowed to exist, and thrive on her own while being complex, and unique in her own way. whenever there is a woc in a game franchise, they are literally pushed to the side. ada is not. ada wong is one of the most influential video game characters.

another thing about ada too is that, there are so many harmful portrayals of asian women, and for the most part - esp in the remakes - ada subverts that. in a lot of media, asian women are overly sexualized, brutalized, the subject of rape and sexual assault, etc. and ada, doesn't fall into those categories. yes, we can say that she is sexualized, but that is not something unique to her. all the character, even leon, are sexualized as well. and ofc, while i am a woc (i am black) I'm not going to speak over orientalism or any asian women who do think she is sexualized. i just think that for the most part, the remake handles her well.

my point too is that, it's hard to find good rep for woc in media. so for us to have ada, and for her to be a character that isn't going anywhere, is just really, revolutionary.

i'll always love her. and seeing her constantly torn down and compared/contrasted to white characters is annoying but it is also, expected. most of the hatred ada gets, tho people will never admit it, is rooted in racism.

I know you might not agree with me but After reading the latest tvline article, I hope Merinda or Taylor leave the show or something happens and the characters break up for good. I used to like this relationship, but after catching up with the last 5 seasons, I hated how Severide turned to a screwup so a woman could fix him. I always loathed this kind of plot. One chicago the the three shows, don't know how to write a character development away from romance.

This whole promotion thing and Severide career don't depend solely on his relationship or how his beliefs were 7 years ago. The constant comparison between him and his father is frustrating. He always has been his been his own person even in relationships. I cringe everytime Stella's dialogues bring Benny like the writers can't come up with any other conflicts other than he is benny's son.

And supposedly they made Stella realise her mistakes from first marriage was her hope she can change her husband and fix him yet with Kelly they making her repeating the cycle the same trying to make him the man she wants a worthy man.

If we are in season 12 and she still thinks he is like Benny and staying with with wouldn't that being the same with Garrett and his addiction minus the abuse but I wouldn’t be surprise if the writers made her accuse him of that too later or made that her argument for not wanting kids after all they revealed in the final Benny was to Damon and they love writing lines making her compare how kelly and Benny are the same.

This relationship started beautifully with Severide questioning his life choices and Stella was looking for a fresh start and a good build-up. Both successful ambitious people wanting more. Then it turned to screw up kelly and strong fixer Stella. I get it with Merinda being the only longest WOC after Monica left and the need to the strong independent female representation most show doing in the last few years in not too good way. They failed what made this relationship interesting, became unhealthy in many occasions. While Stella character may be thriving, Severide character lost what made it interesting himself and his ambitious.

this is going to be so long and my thoughts are probably very unorganized so sorry about that!

yeah, i’m going to have to respectfully disagree with you on this. and i really don’t think there’s any chance of them breaking up. one of them dying? yeah i could see that. but i really don’t think the writers would divorce them. and i don’t think kelly has “turned into screwup so a woman could fix him”. kelly has always said that he wants to be the opposite of benny and this was before he even got into a relationship with stella. parts of those qualities that benny possessed was ghosting and lack of communication. yes kelly has always been his own person but he’s always had that fear of becoming benny. and he’s always had those feelings. he told stella before they started dating that he looked in the mirror and thought he started to look more and more like benny and he didn’t like that. if i’m remembering correctly he also told someone that he’s spent his entire life trying to be the oppsotie of benny. so it’s not like once stellaride got together kelly randomly had a fear of becoming benny. he’s always had this fear of his.

i honestly don’t recall any conversation between stellaride specifically where stella randomly brought up benny just so she could compare to kelly. i remember in early season 10 kelly told stella he talked to his mom about them getting married and she said something along the lines of severide men being doomed for marriage. but stella told kelly that he’s no benny. in the season 11 finale i remember stella comparing kelly and benny. that felt so out of character btw. i’m still shocked about that. but writers really fucked up either how they handled taylor’s leave of absence by writing kelly so out of character. but yeah kelly fucked up big time by ghosting her (as did stella in season 10). he made a huge mistake then and he made amends with stella and now they’re completely fine.

and i know it might be wrong but it’s genuinely hard for me to stay mad at stella and kelly for going mia when the circumstances behind the scenes with miranda and taylor were what they were. the writers truly fucked that up by making them both do out of character things.

grant was a completely different situation. that was an abusive marriage and leaving abusive marriage isn’t as easy as just walking away. especially when there a history between grant and stella where she has said she wouldn’t have survived without him. she wasn’t trying to help grant just so he could be worthy of her. she helped him because he saved her and and she wanted to be able to do the same for him. but she just couldn’t. with kelly, all she wanted was communication from him. she’s not changing his entire personality to make him a “worthy man” for her. that’s just the basics of a relationship.

stella staying with kelly after he messed up is very different then from when stella stayed with grant. i won’t repeat myself about the grant stuff but i will add that grant was entirely dependent on stella. he was literally living off her. and no i’m not exaggerating about that. stella told brett that grant doesn’t have a job and he’s been living off her (i’m paraphrasing). i think kelly’s actions of ghosting stella in season 11 clouds up the fact that his communication has actually come a long way. before he went mia in season 11, the last time he didn’t properly communicate with stella was in very early season 9. and again this mia storyline wouldn’t exist if writers knew how to properly write taylor out.

stella would literally never accuse kelly of abuse. that’s kind of a wild assumption to make. she defended him when tyler tried to compare him to grant. she went through hell and back with grant and kelly is not grant. i’m honestly not understanding your point of bringing the damon/ benny stuff up. are you saying that stella would accuse kelly of abuse since damon implied benny was abusive and she likes to compare them? maybe i’m just not remembering but stella doesn’t compare benny and kelly. i only remember it happening in the season 11 finale. every other time benny is mentioned it’s been stella saying kelly isn’t him.

i still think their relationship is beautiful. they’re just a victim of being the only main couple right now so they get all the drama thrown their way. i still don’t think it’s become “screw up kelly and strong fixer stella”. wanting good communication is the only thing that stella has wanted since the beginning and they have tremendously improved on that front. stella still had made mistakes so it’s not like she’s portrayed as perfect either. having problems within a relationship doesn’t make it “unhealthy” it just means there’s room to make improvements and that’s what stellaride have done.

A baby to love

you got pregnant with Marcus two years after your relationship with Chris started, it was too early. hell you weren’t even engaged!, you started at the final step so quickly.

You were afraid that this is isn’t something Chris wanted so early in his relationship and life. Especially when he started to get better acting offers, and his career is thriving at this point. A kid would be a step back from all of this. You knew it, and you didn’t want that for Chris.

This is his dream, you know that if this baby is a step back from your dream you won’t hesitate to not have it. So, you are not gonna blame Chris if he didn’t want to be a father so soon.

But, you wanted this baby, you dreamt of being a mother, you felt attached to this baby so quickly like you know them for long, you made up your mind that if Chris didn’t want it then you gonna raise the baby alone.

Your parents supported you, that whatever decision you make they gonna be beside you no matter what.

You find out that you’re pregnant two month after the pregnancy. You didn’t know how to tell Chris so you kept if from him for a month. Thankfully it didn’t show, Chris were travelling a lot and wearing a baggy clothes helped. but your friends and parents told you that you can’t keep the pregnancy for him for too long. You were gonna tell him eventually, but you were not ready for him to leave you.

today is the day you gonna do it, you opened your drawer and took the paper out from under you clothes. You went downstairs to your boyfriend who were watching a football match.

You sat beside him you looked at the paper then him then the match. You were nervous. It shows on your face. Anyone could have seen you nervousness from a mile.

“Are you okay?” Chris asked putting his beer down.

You looked at him, tears staining your cheeks “what’s wrong baby?” He shuts the TV and came beside you to hold you.

without talking you gave him the papers, he took a minute reading it and his silence scared you more.

“Are you pregnant?” he asked confused looking at the paper then your face. You nodded your head.

He looked at you again, you swear you can see him smile, but your reaction scared him too “and you crying because you don’t want to?“

You shook your head “okay baby can you tell me what wrong cause I’m freaking out right now” he said putting the paper down and looking at you weirdly.

“I’m pregnant I’ve known for a month and i wanne keep him, I want this baby, and I understand if you don’t want to, your career started to take off and I don’t want my baby to be a burden for your dreams. But nothing you will say is gonna stop me from keeping it, If you want to I won’t tell him that you’re his father I won’t ask you for help I won’t ask you for anyth-“

“waw waw waw, wait a minute, you planned the whole thing already what the fuck babe” he was more shocked about your reaction that the pregnancy itself.

You looked at him silently didn’t want to interpret him and quite frankly you don’t have anything to say.

“I love you too” you said crying even more from happiness, you felt his hands touching your belly. You laughed at him “I’ve an ultrasound tomorrow, you want to come?”

“Absolutely, I can’t wait to meet him or her” He moved away from you and took his phone “what are you doing?” You asked

“Looking for names”

You admired him while he looked through his phone “the baby really won’t be a problem for your career?“ you finally asked the question

“It’s not like I’m the one pregnant” he said, he continued “i have a lot of women who’s is acting with me and pregnant at the same time, it never been a problem with them. So why would it be a problem for me when i’m not the one who is pregnant?, and that doesn’t mean i’m gonna be busy like now. I’m gonna be here, i’m gonna be helping you with everything you need. yeah bonnie's death was really awful as a whole. CAROLINE AND ELENA BARELY BOTHERED TO INVESTIGATE because they were thriving at college, matt was the only one who made any attempt to reach out, tyler gets a pass bc he was in nola....... and ugh bonnie's death being spent entirely on beremy interactions is yikes

warning this isn’t an MFG friendly post whatsoever. There’s nothing great or honorable about that scene for Bonnie. You can look it up on YouTube there’s more people having emotional break downs over Caroline/Elena’s reactions than being sympathetic with Bonnie. Ya know the person whose actually dead.

“Even in death Bonnie remains selfless!”

Bonnie wasn’t just dead for a day or two. She was dead for months on end and they didn’t notice or care until they wanted something out of her. Her body was left in that cave for months. There’s absolutely no way to narratively break down that scene and feel empathy for her friends. Keep in mind Bonnie’s father died and it is mentioned that she didn’t show up for his funeral. She did however have to watch a man that looked like Stefan slit his throat open in the mist of that. Jeremy was the only way they communicated through Bonnie during this time and again no red flags? Forwood gets a whole reunion during this scene. Then instead of the scene allowing some self-awareness(which is too much to ask of them obviously) the scene turns into Bonnie’s spirit comforting them. Its just bad and coveted in the thing plec loves woc suffering and playing slaves to white characters.

When Bonnie is eventually brought back to life she’s the anchor suffering again. She gets one line or mention on her father’s passing and moves on from that. Abby doesn’t get a mention in none of this which is such a grand backpedal after seeing her parents in s4 try and fight for her. Which wasn’t seen from anyone since s1. So you’d think after struggling and trying to free their child from her reckless ass behavior (love Bonnie deeply but hey) they wouldn’t check on their kid? Yet we get to see a whole season of Caroline’s grief process to Liz’s passing plus a funeral. (Which is why to me…i don’t find it that sad and I feel nothing in a rewatch during that era.)

Throw the whole script away and these “friendships”.

I started this blog to criticize a lot of what happens in the Star Wars fandom because it is a lot, but slowly this blog has morphed into my portal to raise my voice for feminism, for my fellow women who struggle and are sick and tired of not feeling safe even in the most basic of cases.

I'm kinda just criticizing what I see in the Star Wars fandom.

Just to be clear, I'm for unwhitewashing the bad batch, I'm aware of the racism and other issues portrayed in all Star Wars media.

With that said: I'm eager to point out when the major voices in the fandom are being hypocrites and how they're essentially just targeting whoever disagrees with them.

While the issues at hand require discourse and action, I am so over the moral superiority, woke toxicity, and cancel culture that thrives in the tumblr factions of Star Wars.

Hence, this blog.

On Feminism/Social Justice

This past year, I've had to deal with safety issues that were caused by men who thought they had power to decide over my life and my physical and mental well-being. I am a WOC feminist living in Mexico, where cases of femicide and discrimination towards women are downright horrible and depressing.

It is not fair that I and other women have to deal with this bullshit every day of our lives. It is not fair that we have to live in fear.

So yes, I am a radical feminist. My fight for our rights seeks to make a world where women can walk around safely, where we can breastfeed in public without being called vicious names, where we can go to a party wearing what we want and not being groped, where we can drink without fear of someone altering our beverage. Where we can live without the worry or fear of s*xual ab*se, threats, and violence against us.

I fucking hate misogyny and I'm not afraid to fight to eradicate it from this corner of tumblr.

So if you cannot understand that women suffer violence because we're women and we want to fight for our safety and for our lives, if you cannot understand the simple premise that violence against us is wrong, if you cannot understand why we should be able to choose over our own bodies, if you are one of those people who will sooner defend a man for his reputation or to coddle his feelings rather than believing in the woman in front of you telling you she's just been abused by him, if you're someone who thinks my calling myself a woman is offensive and I should instead call myself uterus-haver, get the fuck out of my blog and do not interact unless you are mature enough to establish dialogue like an adult.

I agree that Leyla will make a badass surgeon, I thought the ER was going to be the most suitable for her because of her work in refugee camps, she will kill it in the OR.

I also like the callback you made to season 1 about Floyd hiring WOC surgeons. I hope the writers make this happen. This is so much potential storyline for Leyla. Floyd is the chair of surgery now, he can make unilateral decisions in the department.

I like that Floyd is involved now, if there is anyone that can convince Leyla that she deserves the spot and should stay, it's him and I like that they've planted this seed.

Floyd and Leyla meshing so well was unexpected but perfect and now I want them to work a bunch of cases. We lost Agnes and Vijay, and I really miss the mentor vibe of the show. I loved how curious Leyla was and how much you could tell Floyd enjoyed teaching her. I never noticed it before but even though Leyla can be a hothead and is stubborn, on the whole she’s cool and collected, just like Floyd. She’s more open to risk and way more willing to battle it out with a Lauren though, and girlie needs that in a relationship. Also, I need the obligatory “we disagree over a patient” episode with Lauren in the middle. It’s the one trope with an ex and a current lover that gets me every time and even if we get it when Leyla and Lauren are over, I’ll take it. It’ll be even more interesting that way.

Did you see Jocko's tweet about Leyla and Floyd? I love that. They will make a dynamic duo. I'm hoping the writers and showrunners see this potential. They should please not let Shiva go. Lauren can work on herself and we can still see Leyla around the hospital, see how she's coping with separation. It will help us see things from her perspective too. It will make less sense if they just bring back Leyla when they want to rekindle their relationship. It will be less believable because we wouldn't have seen Leyla pining for Lauren.

the ED made sense to me too given her experience in refugee camps and if she was going to pivot away from pediatrics but the overall impression leyla gives me is that she's got some experience with almost all areas by way of necessity. but wow what a Woman.

poor floyd has kind of just been aimlessly floating around since his supposed move to san francisco and vacating the chair of cardio position. he's gone from ED surgeon and backing up shin to deputy general surgeon backing up baptiste to a chair position again. his character really thrived when he had some kind of mentor/mentee dynamic and jocko even mentioned it in his recent interview. the fact that leyla happened to be a reoccurring character they've fleshed out more than their typical side characters and a resident is storyline kismet. i'm glad the writers (hopefully) connected the dots.

the angst potential from this is so delicious. lauren having to call general surgery down to the ED and the fraught but longing tension between her and leyla when she turns up with floyd after weeks of avoiding the ED? trying to navigate being professional for the sake of their patients while pushing down that ache underneath the anger and sadness they feel for each other? the slow thawing of the ice between them and slowly but surely inching back together, cautious but hopeful? inject it 💉💉💉 oh i'd LOVE to see floyd and leyla get into a disagreement over a patient. they're both pretty level headed when it comes to work but we've definitely seen floyd make his missteps (the patient with HIV) and that'd be interesting to see them hash it out and how lauren mediates when she herself is extremely opinionated.

tbh i don’t mind BA in the show so much, no reason for me to ship them but no reason to hate them. but the worst reason a BA stan could give to ship them is the comics. Because Archie treated Betty like a doormat in the comics- there wasn’t even a proper alternative for her but sometimes she got a side character like Adam and i thrived off that.

from all the ba anons i got, this one i was looking forward to answer, because it’s some actually interesting discourse. i have absolutely nothing against the idea of betty and archie. their characters together don’t appeal me but i think that if you look at them as paralleling kids in paralleling houses with paralleling lives that go from light to dark, i think that could be a very interesting story if told the right way. 

my problem with ba runs way deeper than just “it’s a ship composed by the characters of a andrews and b cooper that people cheer for” and i’m adding some discourse about it under the cut (including the comics discourse): 

the bav dynamics in the older comics is outdated and sexist. va are the better ship in there if only because the woman has the upper hand, and i ain’t about to start cheering for men, but they also suck. with ba, not only you have archie making a human doormat out of her, you also have her willingly placing herself in that position and more than often showing obsessive and psychotic behavior with him. the best comics are those where b+v say fuck an archie, and we all know that. i have trouble understanding anyone that actually ships their dynamics like this, but well--digests are meant to be funny, and in the most recent series they toned down these stereotypes a lot. and you have some verses where ba work as a ship. you have universes where they don’t--imo, riverdale is one of them.

i understand when there’s a sense of entitlement that stems from the comics with ba, though. because b is a character that mostly pined for a for over seven decades and the fans of the archieverse sometimes want to see a pay off for that. they see archie as her prize, like she’s entitled to end up with him this time. 

they also see the same for him: he should get ‘the girl’, since he’s ‘the main’. he should get ‘the good girl’, since he’s ‘the good boy’. he should get ‘the one that got away’ because ‘he let her get away’. a lot of comic fans also don’t like how in the comics archie is seen as veronica’s doormat, so they want archie to have a chance of a love that’s ‘pure and true’ (and virginal, and white, and middle class, and self-insert) instead of a rich bitch.

...except that rich bitch this time is not just any rich bitch. veronica is a latina, in riverdale. the lodges are a mexican family. she’s not even a bitch--she’s a reformed rich bitch. and that already changes the entire varchie dynamics. riverdale also changed the entire ba dynamics when they had both ba look the other way for the first time and given her a love interest that could actually compete with archie. this is a different universe. these are not those characters ////// we can discuss how they haven’t given veronica a proper alternative yet, but some other time.

so what’s my problem with ba in the universe of riverdale?

veronica. veronica is my first problem. archie is veronica’s only valid love interest so far and they want to build ba’s narrative by invalidating her. veronica already is a latina woman whose main reference of goodness are the characters of archie and betty, the whitest, most american, most middle-class of the show. veronica's character is seen as sinful, sexual, criminal, dark, bad. she has seen people say that to her face. she has apologized and repented but it’s never enough. her father is sick in the head and many, many riverdale viewers say point blank that varchie are just sex, despite all their build up and romantic highs, that all she has to offer is that she’s hot.

many, many riverdale viewers also say that archie is only waiting for betty now, or that he’s waiting for himself to be ready for betty. idk exactly what they say. that would be fine, except it isn’t anymore. it’s not fine that archie’s had three woc as girlfriends and people will deadass say that he’s just passing time and getting his dick wet while he waits for the white girl next door. it’s not. how can anyone think that’s fine? and whenever the show gives any indication to support this narrative, it disgusts me.

it’s also not fine that betty has finally found the character development needed and broke out of the sexist molds she was made of--always waiting for archie--after literal decades and now people think that because of that, archie should be her prize. archie choosing her is what she gets for breaking the mold and being better. betty finally has someone who loves her and chose her, and who’s the most compatible to her (istg, i have never seen two characters more compatible than bughead are, regardless of my shipping preferences), but people think she needs to do better than “trailer trash” (arguments i’ve seen around). she should get the abs. she should get her first love. she’s entitled to him. he’s entitled to her.

so i don’t support ba in riverdale not only because i don’t think the writers know how to write a compelling story about them like they could, but also because i think this sense of entitlement and this embodiment of awful stereotypes and hurtful prejudices is too much. there are many ways they could write them connecting more interestingly, but the way they’re doing it, and did it already, isn’t it. maybe it’d would work better in a coming of age show that could build some nuances more carefully without just throwing out character development, but that’s not what riverdale is. like i said, it might work in some universes. not in this one.

plus, the way 95% of their fandom behaves is absurd--and i know there are many absurd shippers around, in every fandom, but they also use of many racist and sexist comments towards veronica, classist comments towards jughead; they want veronica to sob and cry, they want jughead to be dead, they want the entire thing to fall apart so the entitled neighbors entitled to be together get together, and it all DOESN’T SIT WELL with me. it just doesn’t.

so, yeah. they’re happening and i always knew that, and i do feel like the show itself sometimes gives out these ~feels about them being entitled to each other which ignites them being hateful, spiteful and spoiled, but the way they wrote it was so careless. i do think that if ras was in actual charge he wouldn’t have messed up so bad, but ras doesn’t really care anymore. anyway. these are my eleven cents.

This isn't much to do with the match in itself but I was looking back at the lineups and I'm so (pleasantly) amazed by the amount of diversity in the two teams, be that french or international players, where in both cases I think half the squad(?) are woc which is extremely rare in europeans women's football (much like the frawnt is much more diverse than the other big euro teams). I love that two of the best teams in european football represent that kind of diversity, and I hope that other teams start to be better because, as one myself, I love to see other woc thrive on a big stage like that!

this ask made me happy. I think psg have about 10 players of colour in the squad. France must have more. D1 teams are quite diverse as well and I hope we can see that in other leagues as well!

we still need more female representation in the media, that much is obvious, but i think slowly we're getting there.And that's the thing 'female' means all women and to basically say that all women are the same is just disgusting

not every character has to be the epitome of you(i mean them but you get it) or whatever you consider makes a woman.maybe i don't entirely relate to ada from re2 for example bc i'm not a femme fatale who uses himbos to get what she wants BUT spoiler: i still love her and think she's badass even if she's not my mirror.that's a type of woman and it's great that they showed it alongside other types.

same with eivor, i personally am not a masculine woman, but i do not flirt with cops to get out of fines or something either lol (or whatever is feminine to do) BUT i wholeheartedly and absolutely love eivor even if she does not represents my whole personality, even if she doesn't look exactly like me, i can find myself in her (and the fact that she's so strong and brave and angry, i think that is a real female experience)

also i think eivor's way of being is very fitting, since the vikings valued physical strengh and therefore men over women, the women who wanted to thrive too had to adopt a more masculine aproach to life, and in the game we can see that even through eivor is well respected by most her male comrades, there still is dag that doesn't want to answer to a woman(otherwise to me it doesn't really make sense, i mean it she was a guy, why would dag have a problem with sigurd's literal bro ofc he would value his real brother more), but sigurd's put her above everyone military so ofc it bothers him. but we also see she is still seen as a woman when she talks to that queen, and just seeing another woman there eases her, cause we know r**e has always been a war weapon, but ofc in the literal 1st scene with her as an adult, kjtove prolly only wants to give her a slap on the wrist then send her on her way.🤡

I agree with you anon, nobody is arguing about having more female representation in vg. Having diverse rep should be celebrated, instead of being trashed on because certain depictions don’t fit into a narrow set of expectations (like what’s going on here). I’m similar like you that there’s no way I have the muscles mass that Kassandra and Eivor have, I can never be as elegant as Evie and persistent as Amunet, nor I’d be as adventurous and brave as Nadine and Chloe, I sure as Hel won’t be as strong as Senua when facing my own demons, and no I won’t be able to run a bureau without prior training like Jesse Faden on the first day on the job. That is the beauty, isn’t it? We should celebrate the fact that this time around, we get to play as a gnc and queer woman. When I was a kid, I’d often talk to the Vietnamese teenagers/women in my house/neighborhood about their experience outside of my hometown while hand-washing clothes together and they’d tell me so many stories; or watch how badass the landlady in Kungfu Hustle is lol. Similarly, vgs educate me about a wide spectrum of women from different backgrounds and places by letting me (a cishet WOC) experience their stories that I wouldn’t have otherwise known about. 

AC doesn’t have a full-fledged character customization so when you play the game, as players you’re supposed to walk in the character’s shoes. If you can’t empathize with a female protag’s story because she doesn’t look like how you expect women to look, and then you bash on her appearance, demanding things to be YOUR way, well. The devs who made Kassandra and Eivor had to “crawl so the next can walk” (nice on, anon!) don’t deserve to be trashed like this. Again, we get changes by acknowledging and celebrating the progress made so far, rather than dismissing it as “lazy” work.

Also, good point about Dag because I get that questioning vibe from him too and it does make more sense if you play as Eivor instead of M_Player; yes, about the queen; and yes about the sexual violence threat that Kjtove made in the opening scene is definitely more disturbing for a woman (I don’t think there’s any debate about this part).

Hey Emma! I adore your writing and I was wondering if I could ask for your advice. When writing an autistic character, are there any characteristics / plots etc that you don't like seeing? Or anything stereotypical that is overused or often portrayed incorrectly in writing?

Hi! Thank you so much 😊 I’m always willing to talk about autistic rep! This is a very interesting question and I’m so glad you asked.

Obviously this is going to be my own opinion (and to some extent, things I’ve talked about with other autistic people) so it’s not representative of the whole community. There is no absolute do/don’t rules here, because autistic people are as different from each other as allistic (non autistic) people are, so the rep is and needs to be varied and complex.

There are many overused tropes when it comes to autistic characters. I think the most obvious one is that a very large portion of autistic characters, especially in general media, are white, male and mostly cishet. It is a misconception that autism is more present in men, and autistic POC deserve rep. I’m not sure how widely known this is, but there is also a much higher fraction of queer autistic people than among the general population. (I tried to find some more articles to link here but I don’t have any on hand and looking this up is a minefield I noped out of immediately. I’ll try to come back with clearer resources).

The usual autistic character is usually of one of two types: little white boy who doesn’t speak, where the story is invariably about his parents/siblings/teacher and never about him, or adult white man who has “Asperger’s” (or maybe isn’t even clearly identified as autistic) and is socially awkward and a genius, usually in math or computers. Those are very much overused stereotypes. Both are often portrayed incorrectly as well: the nonspeaking child is usually only portrayed through the eyes of allistic people and not given any kind of personality, and the adult man often has very little personality other than their genius and their bluntness, doesn’t seem to have any other autistic traits than the ones allistics are meant to admire or laugh at (think Sheldon of TBBT).

That is not to say that all those characters are bad rep, but it would be really nice to see more variety. I want to see autistic POC. I want to see autistic women and nonbinary people. I want to see autistic WOC & nonbinary POC. And I want to see more diversity in the autistic traits that they have, but also in their personalities. Autism isn’t a personality, even though it is part of a person’s identity and affects who they are directly. Autistic characters should have their own likes and dislikes, dreams and hurdles to overcome that aren’t linked to their autism, and their own agency. This last one is especially important in the case of any disabled characters (and doubly if it’s not a man) because this is something that isn’t often given to disabled characters.

Now into slightly more details:

- Autistic geniuses do exist, but that trope is way overused and usually portrayed badly. That doesn’t mean it should never be used again, but it should be done carefully. Characters like House (House, MD), Sherlock (BBC Sherlock) or Sheldon (TBBT) have imo done actually harm to our community, and definitely to me personally (because identifying with a character who self-identifies as a “high-functioning sociopath” is didn’t really help my mental health when I was 16 and depressed). They are either assholes to the people around them, or their awkwardness is played for laughs. You’ll notice that these are also characters who aren’t formally identified as autistic in the shows, even though they are clearly autistic-coded. I do have examples of autistic(-coded) genius characters I think are quite well done, like Sherlock in Elementary or Flynn, Cassie and Jake in The Librarians. Parker, in Leverage, could go into this category, but I’d say that her ‘genius’ is of a different sort, and it’s an interesting twist on the trope.

- Nonspeaking/semi-speaking autistics are underrepresented as full characters (ie outside of the trope mentioned above). That would be really nice to see, but please do proper research before trying to write it. I would love to see characters using AAC tablets or sign language, for example.

- A lot of autistic people also have other disabilities. That can range from other neurodivergences & mental illnesses (ADHD, bipolar, dyslexia, PTSD, etc), physical disabilities, chronic illnesses (some illnesses like EDS have a high co-occurrence with autism). A lot of autistic people are queer. Both of those are things I’d really like to see more of.

- Stimming. The stimming I’ve seen portrayed, when it’s even there (it tends to be mostly forgotten in the genius-type storylines), tends to be very stereotypical. We all have different ways of interacting with our environment and of communicating. There are a lot of ways to flap (clapping, hitting fists together, fluttering fingers, etc), to rock, to self-soothe. I’d like to see characters who use chew toys and stim toys, who stim-dance, who sing, who echolalize a lot.

- Meltdowns. [mention of self-harming stims] This one is a bit delicate. Writers who have an autistic character tend to want to show them in a meltdown at some point to sort of “drive home” that they’re autistic and what it means. I get that, but I also think that it’s something that is hard to portray respectfully if you’re not autistic yourself, and maybe you should really think about whether it’s necessary. If you do decide to do it: not all autistic people will hit their head or hurt themselves or get angry. I tend to just burst in tears and be unable to stop for hours. There are many ways to melt down.

- Specific interests. While math and computers are common specific interests, they are way overused. Specific interests can be anything. Mine is currently Shadowhunters, but also medieval swords and sailing ships and autism and linguistics. Specific interests can be lifelong, they can change overtime, they can last a month and be over. They can coexist simultaneously. Some autistic people don’t really have any.

- I would like to see more stories of late-diagnosed people, though maybe leave the stories about diagnosis and identification to autistic writers. I’d like to see older autistic people. Especially older autistic people who are more visibly autistic. I’d like to see autistic people who are thriving in life, who are in love and have a partner who loves them back, who are good at their job (but not geniuses), who don’t have a job but volunteer and create and do things, who have children or pets.

- Sensory stuff. Hypersensitive hearing tends to be the most common trope, though not necessarily overused, but there are so many other things you can do. We have a lot of senses (more than the usual 5), and autistic people can be hyper and hyposensitive to each of them, sometimes both at the same time. So you can have your character struggle to feel pain, but be bothered by lights. They can be hypersensitive to color, or inversely seek it. They can love listening to the same music over and over again (that’s also a stim).

- As far as plots go. Again, agency is paramount. Their autism shouldn’t be their personality and their motivation. They shouldn’t be striving (or be required) to “overcome” their autism, and even less be cured of it. Accessibility barriers are a reality that should be reflected in fiction, but the story needs to be about more than that.

This is such a reach i have literally no idea where to begin? You can like Daenerys as a character AND acknowledge the story would have been far better if Rhaenys lived. The two are not mutually exclusive.

For people who dont see the clear racism in GRRM’s treatment of the Dothraki, Essoss, the Dornish characters I have pretty much nothing more to say. Same goes for people who think the Dornish are white. Tons of meta has been written on this subject and I have nothing more to add to it. The Dornish are described as dark and experience racialized abuse at the hands of other Westerosi several times throughout the story. Not recognizing that, and the fact that Martin’s writing is littered with racist tropes is kind of willful blindness at this point.

The whole “the Martells are rich” part....so is everyone? Its a series about the nobility they are all 1%ers I hate to be the one to deliver this news. You need to turn off your leftist brain for ASOIAF because everyone from the Lannisters to the Starks are feudal lords who live and thrive off the oppression of the peasantry.

Fruthermore the Martells dont know about Aegon being alive and I know this fandom loves the fAegon theory but it’s yet to be confirmed in canon. If Aegon is the real deal it means that a half Martell child grew up totally outside the sphere of Martell influence and wasnt protected by them.Therefore it is perfectly possible that in a Rhaenys lives AU she would either have grown up with Aegon and JonCon, or could have been on the run with Viserys and Daenerys. In the latter situation she would probably be up for the same sort of abuse and mistreatment that Daenerys recieved in canon because the abuse doesnt stems from Viserys not anything that Daenerys has ever done. Its even possible that Rhaenys would be in for more abuse since Viserys seems to blame Rhaegar being “unhappy” with Elia for his kidnapping of Lyanna Stark and the subsequent downfall of the Targaryens. Given that we know nothing about Rhaenys because GRRM brutally killed her off when she was 3, who is to say she also wouldn’t become a slave liberator? That’s the whole point of AUs - to put other characters in situations different to canon and extrapolate how you think they would behave.

I’ve got issues with Rhaenys reclaiming Daenerys’s canon Essos arc mainly because I dont believe that slapping a WoC on a story with racist and colonialist elements would actually solve anything. People of color are perfectly capable of racism towards other people of colour and honestly at this point theres so much to unpack in the way GRRM writes about Essoss i wouldnt want any character i like (and yes that includes Daenerys) to go near it with a 10 foot pole.

Also GRRM himself told Janina Gavankar (an indian/dutch actress) that she looked like Nymeria Sand so? Indian actors would be perfectly acceptable fancasts even if the author didnt do it himself. Anyways im going to continue fancasting bollywood actors and other non-white actors because I do what I want. Fandom is much more freeing when you stop caring with other people think.

1. Kathony. I know we haven’t met them on screen yet, but I will ride or die for Kate and Anthony. Truthfully, Kate is to me as Penelope is to you ❤️ and the fact that she’s about to be a WOC with the ‘untamable’ Bridgerton bro butt first in love with her is a hell yes from me. They’re spicy, she puts him in his place, EVERYTHING is mutual, they respect each other like... in my eyes they’re perfect. Top tier. The very best ship.

2. Saphne. I only have on screen knowledge but watching the Burn For You scene only solidified my love and admiration of them. She was really willing to give up a life without children and he just wanted her to get everything she deserved. They have flaws and rough patches (and a particular scene I do not agree with or condone), but at their basis and foundation, they are a good ship in my opinion.

3. Santhony. I don’t get why Kate stans are so pressed like... they’re cute 😭 I’m a Kate stan and I love Santhony! I think they’re adorable, and it was interesting to see their dynamic develop and shift and change as the season went on. I’m definitely curious to see how their relationship impacts the future ones in the show!

4. Colina. LISTEN listen listen listen this is mainly based off the fact that the only young black female lead was treated like freaking Cinderella the entire time but when Colin looked at her and was like ‘Who is that?�� I decided to go ahead and ship it with no remorse 😂 Do I agree with the whole trap situation? No. I think it’s shady, but I also think that they would have been wonderful together. Colin would have treated her so well and Marina would have absolutely done the same to him. I just think they’d be cute together!

5. Polin. ONLY IN THE BOOK. After reading The Viscount Who Loved Me and getting snatches of Penelope’s character, I decided this ship could have rights. Show Penelope is very low on my list of characters I like purely because of what she did to Marina and the EXTREME, NEARLY LETHAL AFTER EFFECTS OF THAT and a few other things along that line and nature. But book Penelope is like... actually cool so I think she deserves to be with Colin. On screen, for me personally to get behind it, I’m gonna need one hell of a redemption arc and legitimate consequences. But that’s the fault of the writers so 🤷🏾‍♀️

Does it kinda bother you that besides Hope, Lizzie and Josie, none of the other female characters lasted more than one season(aside from Emma) and that it doesn't help that most of the female characters(Alyssa, Penelope, Kym, Nia, Maya, Cleo, Emma) are all woc. Also, it would be refreshing if another female character was promoted to the main cast

yeah a bit, but in some ways i understand why - olivia had the new show she’s a main character now, karen david is on fear the walking dead, i read somewhere that nia’s medusa cgi had actually blown through their budget in s1, and while i wish she had stayed bc i LOVE her and i love the actress, i guess i can see why they didn’t stay w her. but i think that with characters like kym and nia they can just bring them back and i hold out hope for it lmfao. my situation w penelope and lulu is a bit controversial bc i just genuinely don’t like either of them at all so to be honest it’s never bothered me that she’s gone lmfaoo
